'Wait Until Dark' lights up the local theater scene

Some people are really good at being bad. Such is the case with Michael Shoeman who plays Harry Roat in "Wait Until Dark," now playing at the Tri-County Performing Arts Center in downtown Pottstown.
The suspense in this carefully paced play builds as Roat, along with two clever con men deftly played by Anthony Marsala and Rob Patey, prey upon a seemingly fragile blind woman in search of a mysterious doll that has been misplaced. Tara McFalls delivers a solid performance as the woman, Suzy Hendrix, and never loses her focus in this difficult role.
As Suzy gradually realizes the men are not who they claim to be, she matches wits with them right down to the spine-tingling final act. The direct confrontation between Suzy and Mr. Roat is powerful theater and worth the trip to Pottstown.
On a lighter note, young Hannah Paczkowski who plays Gloria, a bratty neighbor who "helps" Suzy, is delightful, adding some comic relief to an otherwise dark play. I expect audiences will see a lot more of her in the future.
Rounding out the cast are Paul Recupero as Suzy's husband, and Kris Collins and Dave Paczkowski as patrolmen. Whether or not you've seen the 1967 movie of the same name starring Audrey Hepburn and Alan Arkin, the intimacy of the live stage performance makes this a great evening of entertainment. It is not suitable for young children due to violent content.
Performances continue Thursdays through Sundays through Oct. 17 at the theater at 245 E. High St. in Pottstown. For more information call 610-970-1199 or visit the website at www.tripac.org.
